Fishing line electrifies Dying Dyveke's soundscapes

A group of musicians have reinterpreted the songs of classical Danish composer Peter Heise for a performance involving electronically-manipulated fishing lines, which they debuted at Spot festival in ?rhus.

The Golden Age composer's " Dyveke Songs" were written in the 1800s for voice and piano, but electronic musician Sandra Boss and classical soprano Katinka Fogh Vindelev, with the help of arranger Bendt Fabricius, took them as inspiration for their project "Dying Dyveke", which they performed in stage at Spot.

Vindelev's lyrics referenced Danish King Christian I, and his mistress Dyveke's suspected poisoning. "The songs are about a girl, the king's mistress, not being able to break out of her situation," Boss told Wired.co.uk. Over the top of the singing, they played the electrified fishing line which, along with a string quartet, was turned by Boss into an improvised electronic soundscape. "I wanted to make a setup where the scenography could match the sound universe. I didn't just want to play sounds from my computer or generate sounds from modulators and stuff. I wanted the sound to have a visual and physical gesture that could match the story."

Boss explained how she accomplished that: "The fishing lines were stretched out between the floor and Katinka [the singer]. One end of the line was tied to weights, and the other Katinka held in her hands. She sort of controlled how tight the lines were stretched, and whenever the quartet needed to play on the strings, she had to hold them really tight, so that the sound could emit from them. The lines were amplified with small contact mics and the sound from the lines were coming into my mixer, from where I could control them and add effects to them."

She added: "So actually it was all a kind of improvisation between the string quartet, Katinka and I. The whole performance was built up between a mix of the quartet and Katinka playing 'the old fashioned way', as the songs were originally written, and these improvised parts. It's kind of a crazy home built system!"

If you'd like to see the performance in the future, you'll need to be patient. "We do have some concerts in the future," said Boss, "but the exact dates are not planned yet." The best place to keep track of when the performance will take place again is probably boss website
